Melbourn 2 vs Kimbolton I
Mon 14th October
Melbourn won 17-6
Melbourn 2nds hosted Kimbolton’s first team for this Cambs Div 4 Winter League match.
First up was James Storer (5) who played really well to dominate Thomas Moore, a young up-and-coming player to win convincingly 3-0.
On the other court Roger Woodfield (4) faced Kimbolton captain John Tose, another experienced player. Roger took the first game quite easily at 15-7 but then John dug in and tightened up his game no end. The momentum shifted towards the Kimbolton player who steadily gained the upper hand and eventually ran out the winner at 3-1 after a lengthy battle.
Mark Asker (3) was on good form and never looked in any trouble. His aggressive heavy shots overwhelmed Steve Glanville and he won fairly easily with a 3-0 scoreline.
The closest match of the evening followed with Colm O’Gorman (2) narrowly taking the first game against Adam Jessup 18-16 and then the second 15-6. Seemingly in control, O’Gorman then saw his opponent stage a remarkable come-back. The Kimbolton player found new energy and chased everything with considerable success. Colm started to tire and the momentum moved in favour of Adam who recovered the score to 2-2 and then won the final game 15-11 and the match 3-2.
Gareth Jones (1) played his usual game of a run of excellent squash followed by a series of inconsistent shots. This all made for a fast and furious match against Mark Cousins where all the games were really close. But Gareth held his nerve and won all three games by the tightest of margins to take the match 3-0.
Skipper Roger said “This was a very lively match. Winning three strings 3-0 gave us a very strong advantage and we picked up valuable points from the strings we lost. An excellent result.”
