Frank Lee 1 vs Melbourn 1
Weds 6th November
Melbourn lost 20-4
Melbourn 1sts team travelled away to Frank Lee in the Cambs First Division squash last Wednesday.
Not at full strength, Melbourn struggled against an opposition with strength in depth. Malik Bilen was first on at number two and in spite of hard work on court was unable to overcome Chris Shaw who played with better width and strategy.
Kate Bradshaw was next on at 5. This was a see-saw match with Kate playing some tight, accurate squash, pressurising her opponent Ed Hadcock with her aggressive play. At 2-2 however, Kate’s concentration wavered and mistakes crept in allowing Ed to take the fifth.
Skipper Mark Oppen was next up at 3. Playing against Mike Mackay, a very classy opponent who has been at 1st string before, Mark was always on the back foot and struggling to take control of the T, and he lost an exhausting match 3-0.
Aidan Hird travelled from his badminton match to turn out for Melbourn at 4. Again, Aidan faced a very strong 4 string in Adam Searle and was unable to put his recent excellent form into play, losing his tie 3-0.
Last up was Matt Sampson against Will Harris. Always likely to be a close game, it didn’t disappoint. With an abundance of tight play and typical great court craft, Matt was looking good for the win. However, Will fought hard with good consistency and running, and eventually ground out the win 3-2 in a highly entertaining, quality match.
Skipper Mark remarked “The four team points were certainly hard fought and it raised our games. We had other chances but versus a top-flight opposition it was always a tough call.”
