Portugal Place/Cambridge Uni I vs Melbourn I
Weds 19th March
Melbourn won 16-8
Melbourn Squash Club 1sts ended their season on a high note with a 16-8 win at Portugal Place/Cambridge University 1sts.
Melbourn’s win was based on the bottom of their order, and in particular the teenaged Bilen brothers. Younger sibling Mumin (5) recorded a 3-1 win, the key moment of which was taking the third game on a tie-break. Mumin, the youngest player playing at Division 1 level by over two years, ends the season with a highly creditable 3-6 record. That was followed by older brother Malik (3) winning 3-0 with a degree of comfort.
In between the Bilen boys wins, skipper Mark Oppen (4) picked up a 3-1 success in his first match for the team since Christmas due to work commitments. The hosts struck back by taking the top two strings, Ed Wheeler (2) going down 3-0 and Matt Sampson (1) losing 3-2.
Melbourn’s final position in the Cambs Mixed Division 1 table is to be confirmed due to some outstanding results but it will be between fifth and seventh. Whichever it eventually is, it will be Melbourn’s highest ever finish.
