Melbourn vs Hunts County I

Tues 12th March

Melbourn won 20-3

Melbourn Ladies season has been rather disrupted by injuries and unavailability for various reasons. These had a serious impact on the squad, which is high on quality (Champions the previous two seasons) but low on numbers with just 6 players on skipper Lynne’s list. Too many forfeited strings and players pushed up the order lead to defeats against sides a full strength Melbourn team had beaten in previous years, which meant this final match of the season against Hunts County (re-arranged from an earlier date due to availability issues for both sides!) was a contest of two mid-table teams.

The good news was that both clubs could put out a full compliment on the new date, so the season ended with a full evening of Squash. It was one that went Melbourn’s way thanks to the strength at the bottom of the order, with Sam P (3), Frances S (4) and Debbie T (5) all recording comfortable 3-0 wins over Jayne Ingram, Helen Smith and Claire Weston respectively.

The top of the order saw two closer contests. Helen T (2) had to recover from losing her opening game to Nicki Halls and did so to the tune of a 3-1 win but not without some more close games along the way. Kate B (1) was up against a talented teenager from Portugal, Sofia Averio Pita. Sofia had had a strong season on her debut year at top string, with 9 wins and 2 defeats, but Kate is an experienced campaigner at the top of the Ladies order and would have been the favourite pre-match. However, it was the teenager who took the opening game 15-7 before Kate got to grips with the challenge and won the next two. Sofia was not going anywhere, taking the fourth on a tie-break which let Kate know it was working all the way to the line time, which she did winning the fifth game 15-6 for a 3-2 victory. The next meeting of the two will be interesting as Sofia will presumably continue improving, but Kate will presumably be more prepared for the challenge ahead!

The win should mean Melbourn leapfrog Hunts to finish third in the final table, once the result from the January match at Comberton is found and entered...
