Melbourn 2 vs Nuffield (St. Albans) 3
Tues 18th June
Melbourn lost 5-9
Melbourn 2nds hosted league leaders Nuffield III for this Herts Div 4 fixture.
The first contest involved Colm O’Gorman (3) against a strong player, Sean Manning, who demonstrated good fitness and consistency albeit with a limited range of shots. Struggling with a lack of match fitness, Colm lost the first game but competed well in the second but still lost it 13-15. Then Colm challenged hard and dominated the third game and won it 15-9. His challenge continued into the vital fourth game but narrowly lost it 14-16 and the match 1-3.
Matt Walker (2) found himself up against a familiar face in former Cambridge Squash Club member and Scotland Women’s O40 international Mhairi Gritz (née Dougal). Mhairi is a very skilful match player who plays attacking boasts and drops to great effect. Matt made a slow start and lost the first game 12-15. Then he launched a major offensive in the second game and dominated most of the play and won it 15-7. Then, somewhat inexplicably, Matt lost his rhythm and focus, not helped by some disputed calls. With the third game lost, the Melbourn player could not get back into the game and lost the match 1-3.
Aidan Hird (3) started against Jed Whelan strongly, firing his trademark power shots but quickly realised that his opponent was not fazed by the big shots. The game settled down and Hird set about building rallies and winning most of them against a patient and skilful player. Eventually Jed became somewhat demoralised by the inevitable direction the game was going in. In the end, Aidan ran out a comfortable winner 3-0.
2nds Skipper Roger Woodfield said “There’s no doubt that Nuffield are a good side and played good match squash. But we competed very well and, on another day, we would have won this match”
