Melbourn 2 vs Broxbourne 2
Tues 16th July
Melbourn won 10-4
Melbourn 2nds hosted Broxbourne II for this Herts Div 4 fixture.
The first contest involved Ewan Conradie (3) who started slowly and was clearly out of form. To his credit, Ewan did enough to win the first two games against a rather erratic opponent in Steve Celimon. The third game saw the Broxbourne player raise his game to win it 15-11. The fourth game was crucial and Ewan battled through it to win and take the match 3-1.
Next up was Roger Woodfield (2) who made a typically strong start to win the first game 15-7. The Broxbourne player, Shelia Blake, responded very well with excellent attacking boasts and the score reached 14-14 despite Roger having game point. The opportunity was lost and Shelia won the second game 16-14. Encouraged by this, she piled on the pressure and won the third showing superior fitness. Once again in this string the fourth game was to prove crucial and it was nip and tuck until the Melbourn player lost it 16-18 and the match 1-3.
The outcome of the evening depended on the performance of Matt Walker (1). From the start, Matt demonstrated calmness and control against an opponent who became increasingly frustrated by his own mistakes. The Melbourn player took the first game 15-6. The second game was much more competitive but this also was taken by Matt. The third game saw the Broxbourne player, Peter Iszatt, find some form and fight but there was no way that Matt was going to relax his grip and he won the third and the match 3-0.
Skipper Roger said “This proved to be a close match in the end. My own match ended in defeat after a long game but we can thank Matt Walker for delivering an emphatic win. It was good to return to winning ways”
