Melbourn I vs Stamford I
Weds 16th January
Melbourn won 17-7
A young Melbourn 1sts team featuring three teenagers claimed a handy 17-7 win over Stamford 1sts in their latest Cambs Division 1 match.
Mumin Bilen (12) started well at fifth string against Martin Brewin, winning his first game. However, after that, the more experienced visiting player mixed his game up which Bilen found difficult to deal with as he lost 3-1. Skipper for the evening Dan Easton (4) played a fast pace match with Mark Smith, with most of the games going to the wire. This went all the way to a decider, but when that also went to the visitors, Melbourn were two strings behind.
That swiftly became two strings all as Vinod Duraikan (2) and Malik Bilen (3) took control of their matches against Dave Spooner and Simon Morris respectively to record solid 3-0 wins. This made Ed Wheeler’s top string match with Rob Vivian decisive. Wheeler shared his first two games as he and Rob both played at a high level, but Ed stepped it up even further to claim the next two and win 3-1, sealing Melbourn’s victory on the night.
Dan commented “There were some tough players on their side tonight, but everyone played well and contributed to a solid victory.”
