Melbourn 2 vs Ickleford 2

Tues 27th August

Melbourn lost 12-4

Melbourn 2nds hosted Ickleford 2nds for the final fixture in Herts Div 4 Summer League.

First up for Melbourn was Ewan Conradie (3) who started slowly against Rich Brown, a rather unorthodox player, and lost the first game at just 5-15. Then we saw Ewan get into his game with more energy and he narrowly took the second 16-14. His momentum continued into the third game which he won 15-11. Then the Ickleford player fought back and the match turned into a fearsome humdinger with some long and, at times, ferocious rallies. Unfortunately, Ewan could not sustain the pressure and he lost the last two games and the match 2-3.

Skipper Roger Woodfield (2) was pitched against Callum Brock, a very fit player who played some excellent open, fluent squash. The first game went to the Ickleford player but then Roger fought back with some good lengths and drops. He had game point in the second but lost it 14-16. It was the same pattern in the third and, once again, the Melbourn player could not convert game point and the game was lost making the match score 0-3.

Sean Hamilton (1) initially struggled against a very organised and consistent player in Neil Miller, losing the first two games. With the match seemingly out of his grasp, Sean staged a remarkable comeback winning the next two games with amazing energy and determination. This great effort continued into the final game and the Melbourn player established a lead of 9-7. He was unable to maintain this lead and eventually lost the game and the match 2-3

Skipper Roger said “Although we lost all three strings, this was one of our best performances of the summer. All of us played good squash with great energy and determination. All the matches were very competitive but played in a very friendly spirit making it a particularly enjoyable evening. We ended up in the lower half of the league but played some great squash along the way”
