Melbourn 2 vs Gosling 2
Tues 30th July
Melbourn lost 11-4
Melbourn 2nds hosted promotion chasing Gosling for this Herts Div 4 fixture.
First up for Melbourn was skipper Roger Woodfield (3) who made a slow start against Sid Newbon, an opponent he has faced several times in the past. Losing the first game Roger then upped the pace and intensity to narrowly win the second game 16-14. The third game followed the same pattern with the Melbourn player winning it 17-15. Then came the fight back and Sid comfortably won the fourth game with Roger visibly flagging. With the score 2-2, Roger found energy and determination to win the final game 15-13 and the match 3-2 by the narrowest of margins.
Sean Hamilton (2) then took on Oliver Bush, a highly skilled but rather unfit opponent. Sean’s energy and chasing was quite superb but he just lost the vital first game 13-15. After that, the Melbourn could not break his opponent’s game down despite a huge effort which saw some long exciting rallies. Sean eventually lost the match 0-3 but played very well in the process.
Matt Walker (1) started really well and easily won the first game 15-6. Opponent Mike Byrne then settled down and started to play very consistent and accurate squash. Matt fought hard but could not find the same degree of accuracy and consistency as his opponent. He became frustrated and the errors increased as the Gosling player took full control of the match, winning the next three games and the match 3-1.
Skipper Roger Woodfield said “This was always going to be a tough fixture and Gosling did field a particularly strong team. Every game was hard fought but at the end of the day we only managed to win one string and lost the match to a team that is regularly performing well and is likely to be promoted”
