Letchworth V vs Melbourn II

Tues 30th April

Melbourn won 12-5

Melbourn 2 travelled to Letchworth on Tuesday, 30 April, to get their Division 4 campaign underway. First up on the court was Ewan Conradie (3), playing against Stuart Pyper. The Melbourn player got off to a strong start and took the first game relatively comfortably. The Letchworth player came back strongly, though, finding good length balls to the back of the court, and putting Ewan under enough pressure to take the second game. The players traded the 3rd and 4th games, leaving the score poised at 2-2. Stuart took advantage of a tiring opponent, sailing to a comfortable 6-0 lead in the 5th game. Ewan wasn't down yet, and through some determined play managed to best the Letchworth player 3-2 in a tightly fought match.

Matt Walker (2) was up next against Letchworth's Ben Howe. Matt looked comfortable from the start, taking advantage of any loose shots and winning the first two games. Some strong play by the Ben saw him take the third game, but the Matt exerted his dominance in the 4th game, and took it comfortably for the win.

Last on were Melbourn's Aidan Hird (1) and Letchworth's Steve Morgan. Aidan's hard hitting at first played right into Steve's hands as he was easily able to pick up the power shots and produce accurate returns. The Melbourn player struggled to settle into the match and lost the first two games against an opponent who was looking increasingly comfortable. The third game was closely fought until the scores were tied at 7-7, when Aidan finally started to find his line and length, winning the third game. With Aidan now finding his rhythm, he managed to unsettle the Letchworth player enough with accurate shots to take the last two games, winning the match.

Ewan, the 2nds captain for the evening, said: "A great start to our Summer campaign against strong opposition. Some gutsy displays by our players coming back into the matches after trailing." Melbourn's next match is against Luton and Dunstable at Home.
