Cambridge I vs Melbourn I
Weds 17th October
Melbourn won 18-9
The Mixed 1st team had a very good 18-9 victory in a hard-fought match at Cambridge Squash Club 1sts.
Mark Oppen got Melbourn off to a swift start as he beat an out-of-sorts opponent 3-0. However the key to this match was the middle strings, as each of Ed Wheeler (2), Vinod Duraikan (3) and Malik Bilen (4) was taken the distance. Bilen recovered from losing his first two games on tie-breakers, fighting back to claim the third and fourth to level the match. The decider was a nail-bitter as it again went beyond 10-all, Bilen claiming the game 12-10 and his string 3-2. Wheeler’s relentless retrieving worn his opponent down as he won games four and five handily to turn a 1-2 deficit into victory. And Duraikan kept edging ahead, winning his first, third and fifth games.
The top string went the hosts way as Matt Sampson (1) tired unexpectedly and slipped from a game lead to lose 3-1. However, by then, Melbourn had secured a victory which moves them up to fourth in the Mixed Division 1 standings.
