Melbourn II vs Crown Lodge II
Mon 19th November
Melbourn won 19-5
Melbourn 2nds were hosts to Crown Lodge for this Cambs Div 4 match.
First up was Colm O’Gorman (3) who started well and took the first game comfortably but was then pulled back by his opponent who won the second game. The Melbourn player then took control of the match and ran out a comfortable winner to take the match 3-1.
Gareth Jones (2) never looked in any trouble and convincingly won his match 3-0.
The next match turned out to be very close. John Goodfellow (4) lost the first game but came back strongly to win the second game 15-3 and the third 15-11. But his opponent responded well to win the fourth 16-14 despite the Melbourn player having match points. The fifth and final game was hard fought but the Melbourn player lost it and the match 2-3.
Roger Woodfield (5) needed to maintain concentration and focus against a touch player who was able to punish any loose shots. The Melbourn player soon found his rhythm and won 3-0.
The first string match was a lively and entertaining contest with a number of disputed calls but played in a good spirit. Matt Walker (1) struggled to find his true form in the first game and lost it 12-15. But then he came out and played some great squash to win the second game 15-6 in a very convincing way. The third and fourth games were much closer but the Melbourn player maintained his momentum and fine form to win the match 3-1.
Skipper Roger Woodfield said “This ended up being a fairly comfortable win with just the one string being narrowly conceded. The highlight was the way our first string Matt responded so well after losing the first game. He raised his game magnificently and played superb squash to give his opponent no chance of getting back into the match”
