Nuffield Health II vs Melbourn I
Weds 27th June
Melbourn lost 11-3
Melbourn 1sts suffered an 11-3 defeat at St. Albans side Nuffield Health 2nds last Wednesday.
The sides went into the match separated by a few points in the table, with Melbourn looking for a win to leapfrog their hosts. The match started well for us as Chris (3) put in an excellent, controlled performance to edge through an epic match 3-2. The home player, Rob Weeks, won the first capitalising on unforced errors from Chris, but once he cut those out Rob was struggling to win points and the match levelled. The third went the home players way, but again Chris dug in, encouraged to believe that his opponent was as tired by the bouncy ball and warm conditions as he was. Patient play and some spectacular backhand volley kills at the right time saw the fourth and fifth games won as Chris came through 13-15 15-11 11-15 15-8 15-6.
Unfortunately that proved our height point of the evening as Mark (1) struggled with his game and breathing and lost quickly 5-15 7-15 9-15 to Matt Inglis, and Jan (2) never got to grips with the variations of Julian Craxton. Julian is a known entity around the Herts League, with his ability to drop his wrist and boast from seemingly any position particularly noteworthy. However knowing it’s coming in general is a different thing from knowing it’s coming NOW and Jan was repeatedly left on his heels or heading in the wrong direction. There were some good rallies, but it just wasn’t tight enough often enough, leading to a 9-15 10-15 10-15 final score, and a disappointed 3rd string that his fighting win hadn’t been backed up.
