Gosling III vs Melbourn II
Tues 5th June
Melbourn won 10-7
Melbourn 2nds travelled to Gosling 3rds of Welwyn GC for this Herts Div 5 match.
First up was Sean Hamilton (1) who played well to take the first game 16-14. However, his opponent responded well and stepped up his game to win the next 3 games and the match 3-1.
Roger Woodfield (2) played next and narrowly took the first 2 games thanks largely to an unusually large number of errors by his opponent. This situation soon changed and his opponent played much better, winning the next 2 games. Roger pulled ahead in the deciding game and was leading 12-8 when his opponent really put the pressure on and the score advanced to 14-14. Both players then had several match points before Roger eventually won 19-17 and the match 3-2.
The highly competitive nature of this fixture continued with Ewan Conradie (3) playing another experienced match player. After a lot of long rallies with several disputed calls, the 2 players were even at 1-1. Ewan fell behind at 1-2 but played well to win the fourth game. The final game was equally tough but Ewan played some good squash to win it and the match 3-2.
Skipper Roger Woodfield said ‘This was a really close match with all 3 games intensely competitive. It was the sort of match you would always be particularly pleased to win.’
