Hunts County Ladies I vs Melbourn Ladies I

Mon 29th January

Melbourn won 16-9

Melbourn Ladies travelled over to Hunts County last Monday for what promised to be a close match. Sam Pluck (string 2) went on first against a rapidly improving junior player. Sam made a strong start with excellent length shots and great focus. Her opponent, Sofia Pita, made it tough with some confident return play. This took the match to 2-2. However, in the end Sofia made too many mistakes and couldn't convert to point-wins having set up many rallies and Sam held on to take a crucial 3-2 win, 15-13 in the final game.

Debbie Thain at 5th string put in a relaxed performance and eased through to a relatively unchallenging 3-0 win against Claire Weston. There was no such luck for Frances Smith at 4th string. Having beaten her opponent, Nicki Halls, in a previous match, her opponent was out for revenge. An ex-county junior player, Nicki kept her focus resulting in a 3-0 win for Hunts.

Lynne Hayes (3rd string) faced a very tough opponent in Nikki Mounter. History might have suggested this would be a clear win for Nikki, but Lynne, unsure of the team’s scoreline, was highly motivated to secure as many points as possible. She put in an outstanding performance which saw her come back to 2-2 from 2-1 down. Unfortunately, she couldn't quite carry the momentum in the fifth and she lost 15-6 in the final game, but a fantastic effort, nevertheless.

Last up was Kate Bradshaw (1st string) against one of her training partners, Tayla Mounter. The match started with some tight play from both players and a very tight scoreline, 15-13 to Kate. The next game proved easier for the Melbourn player as serves and early takes led to a runaway victory in the second. However, the lingering effects of flu were beginning to take their toll on Kate who lost the level pegging in the third game, handing the last four points of the game to Tayla. Determined not to go to a fifth, Kate slowed the game down and focused on target hitting producing a 15-7 win in the fourth and the match for Melbourn.
