Newmarket II v Melbourn II 25th January 2018
Melbourn II won 16-8
Melbourn travelled to Newmarket expecting a very competitive match and so it proved to be. Rich March (4) went on first to play an experienced campaigner who produced some difficult squash for Rich to deal with. However, as soon as Rich worked out how to play Steve Wrigley, Rich proceeded to win 3-0 quite comfortably. On the other court, Mike Easton (3) had a real battle on his hands and found himself 0-2 down. Showing real character Mike came back well to level the game 2-2. Despite his best efforts Mike could not win the final game which he lost 11-15. Meanwhile, Roger Woodfield (5) was working towards a comfortable 3-0 win against an opponent who found it difficult find his rhythm in a one-sided contest. Matt Walker (1) was up against a tough opponent who beat him 3-0 despite fighting hard all the way.
At this point, the match was even at 2-2 and the result was in the balance as Aidan Hird (2) faced a very cool opponent. Aidan just could not settle into his game and lost the first game 10-15. As the second game progressed Aidan showed signs of finding his form and more consistency, eventually winning 20-18. This was a crucial game to win. Until now, Aidan’s big hitting had not unsettled his opponent, but in the third game Aidan used his superior fire power to great effect and played some excellent squash to win 15-10. But the contest was not over as Newmarket’s Richard Fella fought back well to win the fourth game 15-10. So, with the score 2-2, the fifth game was to decide the outcome of the match. There was some excellent squash played by both players but Aidan, eventually, won the fifth 15-10 to win what was a very exciting, not to say nail-biting, contest.
It is fair say that the Melbourn team were both pleased and somewhat relieved to win this match.
