Broxbourne II vs Melbourn II
Tues 14th May
Melbourn won 11-4
The Seconds made it three wins from three in Division 4 as they won 11-4 at Broxbourne 2nds.
The match started on two courts with Ewan C (3) taking on Gary Wheeler on one of them and Sean H (2) facing Jason Wright on the other.
Ewan quickly found Gary was of the Taz the Tasmanian Devil school, a flurry of furious movement and hitting. Initially taken aback, the Melbourn player lost the opener comfortably before figuring out that to fight fire takes ice; i.e. slow things down and play tight and deep to the back corners. Thinking clearly helped as Ewan fought back to win 8-15, 15-13, 15-10, 15-13.
Meanwhile next door, things were very tight by all accounts (i.e. eye witnesses were not available for this report). Sean described it afterwards as a very hard game. 3-0 doesn’t necessarily sound like that, until you look at the game scores – 16-14, 15-12, 17-15. Nothing at all in it, making coming away without dropping a game very impressive.
That meant Melbourn had won before Matt W (1) took the court against Peter Iszatt. Matt has been in extremely good form recently, but it was mysteriously absent on this night. Despite making unusually many mistakes Matt still built a two-love game lead, but once Peter dug himself in the match turned around and Matt went down 16-14, 15-12, 10-15, 6-15, 11-15.
