St. Ivo II vs Melbourn II
Tues 12th February
Melbourn won 20-5
Melbourn 2nds travelled to St Ives for this Cambs Div 4 match. First up was Roger Woodfield (5) who was pitted against an up-and-coming junior, Diego Pita. The first game was closely contested and eventually went to the Melbourn player 20-18 as well as the second game. As the Melbourn player started to tire, the St Ivo player gained confidence and won the next two games. In the final game, Woodfield changed tactics and upped the pace and attacked strongly which proved too much for his opponent and Melbourn took the string 3-2.
On the other court Mark Asker (4), who was a last minute replacement, had a much more straightforward match winning comfortably 3-0 against Danny Caulkett snr.
The second string match was a tough contest played at high pace. Gareth Jones (2) narrowly lost the first two games to Rob Breslar but recovered to win the third 15-8 [Ed – the results on the league website say Gareth shared the first two games and lost the third 15-8, but details, details!]. Gareth then steadily took control of the match and won the next two games and the match 3-2.
John Goodfellow (3) started well winning the first game 15-7 but then his opponent, Sean Gant, put in a spirited effort which the Melbourn player was able to overcome and take the game 19-17. The third game was convincingly won and the match 3-0.
Matt Walker (1) started well taking the first two games against Alistair Paul. The third game was hard fought going to the St Ivo player 15-13. Order was restored in the fourth with the Melbourn number 1 regaining control to win 15-7 and the match 3-1.
Skipper Roger Woodfield said “This 20-5 win was a strong team performance taking the maximum points possible which keeps us in the hunt for promotion to Div 3”
