Melbourn vs Cambridge I
Tues 12th February
Melbourn won 17-7
Melbourn beat Cambridge 1sts 17-7 in match that paired the defending Cambs Ladies League Champions (Melbourn) against the current leaders (Cambridge). It also doubled-up as the Semi of this season’s Portway Perpetual Cup.
Most of the strings were close, but the closest was Debbie (5) against Amanda Fuller. There was never more than a handful of points in any game, Debbie taking the first two, Amanda fighting back but Debbie prevailing in the fifth 15-10.
4th string paired Frances against former Melbourn player Lucy Robertson. This one was a bit more up-and-down as each player won one of the first two games comprehensively. After that Frances’ considered play took command against Lucy’s more dynamic but also more frenetic style as she came through 3-1. This was the first defeat that Lucy has suffered this season.
Also coming in boasting a 100% record was Stacy Knoop, but Sam (3) was always likely to test that. Again, there wasn’t all that much between the players, though Sam did shade the first two games. Stacey pulled one back via a tie-break but Sam reasserted herself to win 3-1 and ensure Melbourn’s victory on the night.
Helen (2) was up against a very experienced match-player in Sarah Howlett, who also represents England in Masters Squash. Sarah won the opener, but Helen fought back and took game 2 to an extended tie-break. However when this went against Helen it left her with too much to do and she lost 3-0.
The final match pitted Kate (1) against fellow Cambs County team player, Reka. Reka has improved rapidly in recent years and had actually beaten Kate in the players last meeting. This time it was Kate getting revenge, edging Reka out in the opener, cruising through the second and then snatching the third via a tie-break.
