Nuffield 3 vs Melbourn 2

Nuffield 3 vs Melbourn 2

Tues 20th August

Melbourn lost 12-0

Melbourn 2nds travelled to St Albans for this Herts Div 4 fixture, knowing they were going to be really up against it on two counts. Not only were Nuffield the league leaders having lost just one match but Melbourn could only field two players due to many squad members away on holiday. Nonetheless, the Melbourn players went into battle with their usual enthusiasm.

The first contest involved skipper Roger Woodfield (1) who initially struggled to find any rhythm against a particularly skilful player. It wasn’t until the third game that Woodfield started to exert some meaningful pressure forcing a 14-14 situation. Sadly, he was unable to convert that into a winning position and he lost that game 14-16 and the match 0-3.

Ewan Conradie (2) started more effectively and there were a number of long rallies. However, Conradie found it difficult to really break his opponent’s game down to take control. His opponent remained unflustered and was able to put in some fine defensive returns even under pressure. So, despite a gallant effort, Conradie went down 0-3. With the third string conceded 0-3, Melbourn lost the match 0-12.

Skipper Roger Woodfield said “We were disappointed to field just two players but, at the end of the day, we were well beaten by a very strong Nuffield team”
