Melbourn II vs Newmarket II
Mon 26th November
Melbourn won 20-1
Melbourn 2nds were hosts to Newmarket for this Cambs Div 4 match. Unfortunately, the visitors could only field 3 players which meant the home team automatically claimed two 3-0 victories.
John Goodfellow (3) played first and was never seriously troubled by an enthusiastic but inconsistent opponent. The Newmarket player could not cope with the all-round game of the Melbourn player who won 3-0.
Gareth Jones (2) took a while to settle down against a big-hitting opponent as he was drawn into fast and furious squash. The Melbourn player narrowly won the first game 15-13 and the second game 15-11. His opponent then fought back to win the third game 15-11. Finally, Gareth found his rhythm and played some useful squash to win the fourth game 15-8 and the match 3-1.
The last game of the evening saw Matt Walker (1) take on a relatively inexperienced opponent and win comfortably 3-0.
Skipper Roger Woodfield said “It was disappointing to play a weakened team with only 3 players. Nonetheless, we maintained our concentration to take the maximum 20 points which helps to keep us on track for possible promotion to League 3”
