Kimbolton II vs Melbourn II
Weds 14th November
Melbourn lost 17-10
Melbourn 2nds travelled to Kimbolton for this Cambs Div 4 match.
First up was James Storer (5) who was outplayed by a young player who demonstrated great skill and prowess to win 3-0.
Roger Woodfield (4) started well and grafted to narrowly win the first 2 games. Then his opponent stepped up the pressure and energy levels to take the next 2 games quite comfortably. Despite raising his game again the Melbourn player could not contain his opponent’s momentum and lost the final game 11-15 and this marathon encounter 2-3.
Meanwhile, John Goodfellow (3) had a more straightforward contest despite losing the first game 12-15. The Melbourn player then exerted his authority and convincingly took the next 3 games to win 3-1.
On the other court another closely fought contest was underway with Colm O’Gorman taking on a very experienced match player. The Melbourn player took the first game but then the momentum see-sawed back and forth resulting in a 2-2 situation. The final game was breathtakingly close with Melbourn coming out on top to win it 16-14 and the match 3-2.
The first string match was equally close and absorbing. Matt Walker (1) started slowly and soon found himself trailing 0-2. Then he really stepped up the pressure and easily won the third game; this momentum continued into the fourth which he won. The final game, however, was a really tight affair with the Melbourn player having several opportunities to win the game. But his opponent fought hard and just managed to win the game and the match 3-2.
Skipper Roger Woodfield said “This was the closest and hardest fought fixture of the winter campaign so far. At the end of the day we were disappointed to lose two of the three strings that finished 3-2. However, everyone stepped up and fought hard for every game which bodes well for the rest of the season”
