Gosling I vs Melbourn I
Weds 16th May
Melbourn lost 10-5
Melbourn Squash Club 1sts slow start to their Herts Summer League Division 3 campaign continued as they were beaten 10-5 at Welwyn-based side Gosling I.
Chris Fowell (3) got Melbourn off to a good start as he produced solid squash, keeping rallies alive and giving his opponent the chance to make errors. Which the Gosling player did as Fowell came through 3-1.
It took Jan Brynjolffssen (2) two games to get into gear, by which point he was a long way down. An improved third wasn’t enough as that slipped away 15-11 for a 3-0 defeat. The evening stood at one-all prior to Mark Oppen’s top string match. Oppen started well, claiming the opening game on a tie-break. He also dug in to level up at 2-2, but the effort required drained him for the decider as the home player took the string 3-2 and the overall tie 2-1.
Skipper Brynjolffssen said of the match “On another day we would have won this one. If we continue to play to this standard, victories will come.”
