Melbourn II vs Fenland I
Mon 3rd December
Melbourn lost 7-18
Melbourn 2nds were hosts to League leaders Fenland for this Cambs Div 4 match.
First up was John Goodfellow (3) who was pitted against another experienced match player. Although the Melbourn player lost 0-3, the scoreline (11-15 16-18 12-15) confirmed just how close every game was.
Gareth Jones (2) struggled to find his form against a rather unorthodox player but still took the first game 15-13. The Melbourn player then lost concentration and lost the next 2 games by a long margin. However, to his credit, the Gareth regained focus and played well to win the next 2 games and the match 3-2. Meanwhile, Sean Hamilton (4) was unable to seriously challenge another good match player and lost 0-3.
Roger Woodfield (5) had a great start winning the first game 15-3. Then his opponent settled into his game and gradually took control of the match and the next 3 games, although close, went to the Fenland player who won 3-1.
The first-string match proved to be an entertaining contest with Melbourn’s Matt Walker (1) making a slow start to lose the first game. But then, as is often the case, he really got into his game and played very well to win the next 2 games. Playing well and the momentum with him, it looked as though the fourth game would also go to Melbourn. However, the Fenland player dug in and saved match points and won the game 18-16. The final game saw the visitor flag and the Melbourn took the game comfortably and the match 3-2.
Skipper Roger Woodfield said “This was a strong Fenland team who showed why they are top of the table. We put in a good performance although we probably should have picked up a few more points from this match”
