Melbourn II vs Gosling III

Melbourn II vs Gosling III

Tues 7th August

Melbourn won 9-5

Melbourn 2nds took on Gosling III at home in this Herts Div 5 fixture.

With many of the squad away on holiday Rob Davis had to step up and play first string. This was a tough match for Rob as the visiting team were able to field their usual players. Playing first, Rob struggled to find form and rhythm against a well established team player who was playing largely consistent squash. Rob lost the first game but did put his opponent under pressure and nearly won the third game but went down 0-3.

Next up was Roger Woodfield (2) who started well and won the first game comfortably. But his opponent changed tactics and won the next 2 games. The match swung Melbourn’s way as Roger upped his game, making fewer mistakes and putting more pressure on his opponent. With the fourth game under his belt, Roger held the line and edged victory in the fifth game to win the match 3-2. In fact, this was a rerun of the away fixture when the Melbourn player also won the fifth and deciding game.

Ewan Conradie (3) showed great character and determination in his game to narrowly take the first game 15-13. Then Ewan started to dominate the match with a fine second game and a third game which demolished his opponent 15-4. This meant Melbourn ran out winners 9-5.

Skipper Roger Woodfield said “This was a highly competitive fixture and we applied ourselves well, a very good result”
